Normal PSA Level
PSA levels are measured in nanograms per milliliter of blood, or ng/ml. A nanogram is a billionth of a gram, thus an extremely small amount. Results under 4.0 ng/ml are generally considered normal. Results over 10.0 ng/ml are high, and values between 4.0 and 10.0 are considered borderline. The higher the PSA is, the more likely the presence of prostate cancer is. Some experts recommend adjusting the upper limit of normal for age because PSA usually goes up a little with age, due to the gradual enlargement of the prostate. Thus, when adjusted for age, normal levels are a little lower for younger men and higher for older men.
