Screening means testing men who are apparently healthy, and with no symptoms, to identify those with a higher probability of having a disease and who are then appropriate for further diagnostic testing. In this respect, screening tests for men at higher risk is not really screening. It is more like early detection. In relation to prostate cancer, the presence of a strong family history or African American race indicates higher risk. For these men, screening for prostate cancer is more like early detection testing and thus is less controversial than screening low-risk men. Early detection allows the disease to be treated at its earliest point to give treatment the best chance of being successful.
