Black Cohosh - Traditional Uses

Black cohosh has been known by a variety of common names, including black snakeroot, rattle root, squawroot, and bugbane.

  • Native Americans used black cohosh for ceremonial treatment of snakebites as well as for medicinal purposes, including treatment of rheumatism, kidney disease, respiratory illnesses, and skin problems.
  • The plant later became associated with women's health -- for promoting lactation, stimulating menstruation, and easing the discomfort of menstrual cramps.
