Age Groups and Depression

For major depression, the highest prevalence rates are found in people -- particularly women -- 18 to 45 years of age. In contrast, prevalence rates of mild-to-moderate depression increase with age until the age of 65, after which there is a marked decrease (Bland 1997; Horwath and Weissman 1995; Keller 1994).

In children, mild-to-moderate depression also appears to have an earlier onset than major depression (Keller 1994). The age range for onset of mild-to-moderate depression in children is 6 to 13 years, and an earlier onset predicts a more prolonged episode.
