Feverfew

Feverfew is a member of the daisy (Asterasceae) family. This perennial herb is found in the U.S. and across Europe. Feverfew formulations -- fresh, freeze-dried, or extracted -- are prepared from its leaves.

Research has shown that feverfew can be used for the prevention of migraine headaches.

Dose
Feverfew is available in a variety of product types.

  • The recommended daily dose of feverfew corresponds to 50 to 250 milligrams of dried leaves.
  • A time limit for feverfew treatment has not been established.

Cautions
Situations in which use of feverfew is not advised: Do not use feverfew during pregnancy or lactation or if allergic to ragweed or to members of the daisy family.

Side Effects
Feverfew can cause allergic reactions in individuals who are sensitive to ragweed or to members of the daisy family.

Drug Interactions
Use feverfew with caution -- if at all -- in conjunction with over-the-counter migraine medications. Do not use feverfew with Coumadin® or other blood-thinning drugs, except under medical supervision.
