Goldenseal
Goldenseal is a perennial plant native to the eastern U.S. Extracts of goldenseal are prepared from the dried roots of the plant and the thickened, underground rootlike stem (rhizome).
Although preparations of goldenseal are used to treat both external and internal conditions, clinical trials addressing the safety and effectiveness of these preparations are unavailable.
External Use

- controls fever and infection
- improves appetite and digestion
- used as a mouth rinse for canker sores
Dose
Goldenseal is available in a variety of product types. The recommended dose of goldenseal is the equivalent of 500 to 1,000 milligrams of dried rhizome and root three times daily. This dose should not be exceeded.
Cautions
Situations in which use of goldenseal is not advised
Do not use goldenseal internally during pregnancy, as the extract contains substances that may cause the uterus to contract.
Side Effects
The fresh plant may cause mucosal irritation.
Drug Interactions
There are no known interactions of goldenseal with any drugs.
