Valerian - Active Components
In laboratory studies, valerian generally dampens the activity of the central nervous system; however, the ingredient or combination of ingredients responsible for this effect are unknown (Hendriks et al 1985).
Early biochemical studies focused on the fat-soluble compounds in valerian (Houghton 1988). More recent product formulations are standardized to water-soluble compounds, including the content of valerenic acid. Both fat- and water-soluble extracts appear to have some sedative and sleep-supporting effects.
