Valerian - History and Folklore
Several species of plants in the valerian family have been considered luxury goods since the beginning of civilization. A sixteenth century British herbal cited its use for "crampe and other convulsions" as well as for bruises. The herb became associated with the treatment of nervous disorders and hysteria by the early eighteenth century. Valeriana officinalis is one of several herbs with the common name "allheal" -- or panacea -- in various cultures. Its use for insomnia is relatively recent in herbal medicine.
