Herbal Remedies FAQ -- Government Regulation of Herbal Supplements and Products

Is the production of herbal products regulated by the U.S. government?

While the labeling of herbal remedies and the claims a vendor can make about them are regulated by the U.S. government, the production of herbal products is not regulated. The Food and Drug Administration has the power to issue regulations that prescribe good manufacturing practices for herbs. So far, such practices are proposed by the industry, approved by the FDA, adopted broadly, and policed by the industry.
