The Celebration Walk: Who Sampled Whom

Not a fan of rap -- yet? These highlights might change your mind. This list pairs a handful of hip-hop tunes with the sources of their samples. If you are a fan, the list is an excuse to dig up the original versions of these melodies and beats. Loads of songs would work brilliantly here, but I focused on ones that were positive and celebratory, including a roll call of happening cities, praise for one's mother, and more. The only apparent exception: "Hip Hop Is Dead." Despite its rougher tone (and title -- though we've listed the edited version here), it's a meditation on the magic and potential of rap music. In those senses, it's a celebratory cut, too.
