Black Cohosh - Scientific Background
Extracts of black cohosh have shown estrogen-like effects in a large number of laboratory studies. The hormone-like activities were found to be due to three sets of unidentified constituents (Düker et al 1991).
Black cohosh may be recommended for controlling menopausal symptoms.
In controlled clinical trials of women with hot flashes or other menopausal symptoms, long-term (4-8 weeks) use of black cohosh root controlled symptoms about as effectively as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) (Murray 1996; Liberman 1998).
Black cohosh may be recommended as a substitute for HRT.
Black cohosh often is recommended as a substitute for HRT among women who cannot take synthetic estrogens or those who prefer to avoid them (Hendrix 1997).
