dilation and curettage

Dilation and curettage (also known as a D&C) is a minor inpatient or outpatient procedure to diagnose and treat menorrhagia (heavy periods) and other conditions. (Here are some other factors that can cause heavy periods.)

The surgeon dilates a woman's cervix and inserts a thin, spoon-shaped instrument to scrape off a sample of the lining of the uterus or to remove the portion of the internal lining that's causing the bleeding. A D&C can treat uterine polyps and fibroids, two common causes of heavy periods. (Learn about other treatments for menorrhagia.)

A D&C is also performed to diagnose why a woman is having difficulty getting pregnant or to remove uterine lining after a miscarriage.

The procedure has some risks, including potential injury to the uterus and cervix, and, rarely, scar tissue on the uterine wall and infection.
