Effectiveness of Clinical Breast Exams

When compared with no screening, clinical breast examination without mammography may be effective in reducing the death rates from breast cancer. So far, the evidence on the effectiveness of CBE is indirect, and it cannot yet be decided if CBE adds benefit to screening with mammography alone.

Good evidence indicates that having a clinical breast examination every 1–2 years with mammography is beneficial to women age 50–69, or to women with a risk of breast cancer that exceeds the risk of a 50-year-old woman. There is not enough evidence to recommend or to not recommend having a clinical breast examination every 1–2 years without mammography, regardless of the age and risk.
