Components of an Expert Exam

• A medical history including a summary of risk factors and family history of breast cancer
• A visual inspection of the breasts with the woman either standing or sitting
• An expanded visual examination of the breast area with the woman's arms up over her head and then pressed into the hips so that the whole breast area is exposed
• An examination of the lymph nodes under the arms and around the collarbone by touching and pressing in the areas
• Palpation of breasts while the woman is lying down
